Bath, The city, in the valley of the River Avon. A city so beautiful and special that it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.
Bath is Independent, creative, unique and stylish, and is the only place in the UK where you can bathe in naturally hot spa water and original roman style baths, making it the ultimate spa break destination for thousands of years. The city became a spa with the Latin name Aquae Sulis (“the waters of Sulis”) c. AD 60 when the Romans built baths and a temple in the valley of the River Avon.
Superb Roman remains, glorious Georgian architecture, spring water spas, and first-class shopping – the golden city of Bath has it all. The Romans were really onto something. In the 17th century claims were made for the curative properties of the water from the springs and Bath became popular as a spa town during the Georgian era, leaving a heritage of Georgian architecture crafted from Bath stone, including the Royal Crescent, Circus, Pump Room and Assembly Rooms where Beau Nash presided over the city’s social life from 1705 until his death in 1761. Jane Austen was Bath’s most famous resident, and you can step into her world at the fascinating Jane Austen Centre. Further building was undertaken in the 19th century and following the Bath Blitz in World War II.
